“Jim Denevan draws inspiration from the earth to create sensual works of fleeting beauty—culinary installations in sunny farmlands across America and large-scale art pieces on the wave-swept sands of coastal beaches.”  You can make a reservation on his website.

Liu Bolin - the invisible man

Chinese artist Liu Bolin has made an art of becoming the invisible man. He claims his photos make a statement about his place in society. He sees himself as an outsider whose artistic efforts are not always valued, especially in his native country (thanks to my artist/designer friend Paola in Mexico City for this link).

kermit jacket

This is one of the most horribly wonderful things I’ve ever seen. It’s kitch at it’s most brilliant. This is what happens when you let artists design your clothes. Apparently Lady Gaga has a team of artists that help design her wardrobe. She wore this wonderful thing for an interview in Germany recently, she walked into the interview as if she is wearing a mink jacket. Remember those mink jackets from the 1930’s-40’s era - that actually had mink heads on them? Made me wonder what Ms. Piggy would have thought about this - yikers. Imagine the possibilities though,Lady Gaga could start a spoof of Hermes, and call it “Kermes”.

stock illustrations by Leonardo Côrtes

My favourite illustrations on the stock “photo” site www.istockphoto.com are by Leonardo Côrtes of Montreal. He creates lovely childlike seamless (repeatable) vector illustrations - that are available for purchase for approx. $20.00 each. If you are looking for a fun idea for a kid’s room, buy some of Leonardo’s illustrations and bring them into a print shop - ask them to make poster size prints for you. You can join his Facebook group to share photos of what you have done with his illustrations.

ABSOLUT - Justin Broadbent

ABSOLUT vodka is hosting a party as part of its summer promotions. Though the brand has collaborated with more than 300 artists around the world, this is the first time it has commissioned an artist in Canada.  Justin Broadbent, a Toronto-based artist, is conceptualizing the event. Broadbent, a multi-disciplinary artist has been commissioned by Absolut to transform a secret “unconventional” space into an all-day art exhibit that turns into a party at night. To do this, Broadbent can use any form of art, so long as it embodies the idea that, “In an Absolut world, opportunities pop up,” the tag line the brand is using in its summer marketing. Follow updates on Justin’s blog, and pencil in August 13, 2009 on your calendar!
